Valletta, Malta: More than 70 illegal migrants may have been killed after their boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea, according to police in Malta.

Eight survivors from the boat, which had come from Africa, were rescued after the fishing vessel sank around 70km from the Maltese coast.

More than 1,000 migrants have made it to Malta in 2008, making the journey in small boats.

However there is often tragedy, with the last big disaster happening in May 2007 when a boat containing more than 50 people went missing on the way to the island.
