Islamabad: Police are keenly studying the bomb attack on Saturday night that killed a Turkish woman and wounded four FBI agents among several other people dining at an Italian restaurant in Islamabad.
Senior officers said on Monday they had not linked any of the people taken into custody with the attack on the Luna Caprese restaurant, a favourite hangout for foreigners as it is one of the few places in the capital where alcohol is served.
The investigation was being carried out jointly with intelligence agencies, and a forensics report was awaited to ascertain whether the bomb was planted in the garden dining area or lobbed over a wall.
The blast left a crater about a metre wide, and police were immediately able to rule out a suicide attack, which has become the favoured mode of attack of Islamist militants since mid-2007.
Investigating officer Ashraf Shah said anywhere between three to four kilogrammes of explosives had been used in the attack.
No arrests
"We have made some detentions focusing on suspicious people, and people unable to account for their presence in Islamabad but there has not been any arrest," said Senior Superintendent Kaleem Imam.
The FBI confirmed on Sunday that four of five Americans wounded in the attack were FBI agents. "Four FBI personnel were slightly injured in the bombing attack in Pakistan," a spokesman said.
ABC News identified one of the wounded agents as Ray Biteski, the embassy's FBI attache.
Peshawar (AFP) A suicide bomber blew himself up at a police barracks in the violence-plagued northern Swat valley yesterday, killing two policemen and injuring six others, police said.
A young man pretending to be a recruit and holding a police uniform entered the barracks at Mingora city, the main town in the region, and set off the device when he was stopped for questioning by local officers, said police spokesman Ammanullah Khan.
"He detonated explosives strapped to his body. Two policemen are martyred and six are wounded in the attack," Khan said.
US, British, Canadian, German, Japanese and Italian nationals were among casualties when a bomb hit a restaurant in Islamabad days back.
