Manila: Clashes in eastern and southern Philippines claimed the lives of five soldiers and two communist rebels, officials said on Monday.

Four of the soldiers were killed in a clash with communist guerrillas in Paranas, a town in Samar province, 540 kilometres southeast of manila.

An army spokesman said no casualties on the enemy side were reported.

In a separate clash in a town, 750 kilometres south of manila on Sunday, two rebels and one soldier were killed.

60 guerrillas attacked an army base in the outskirts of Carmen, triggering a two-hour battle.

An army official claimed the rebels used civilians as shields in their escape toward the jungle.
