Manila: Qantas airlines rushed to inspect oxygen cylinders on its entire fleet on Monday as investigators said a tank was missing on a jet that made an emergency landing in the Philippines.

Civil authority spokesman Peter Gibson confirmed an oxygen cylinder was missing from the jet that landed in Manila on Friday after a blast tore a hole near the jet’s right wing.

The jumbo jet was carrying more than 350 people at the time of the incident. There were no reported injuries.

Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority said Qantas was ordered to quickly inspect every oxygen bottle aboard its fleet of 30 Boeing 747s.

"If it turns out that is the cause of the accident, the cause of the hole in the side of the aircraft, obviously that will be a key part of the investigation," Gibson said on Monday.

He said the incident was "very unusual and obviously understanding why that happened will be absolutely critical to making sure it can't occur again."
