Manila: Police authorities in Makati and Manila have unveiled innovative solutions to address local security concerns using readily available materials and low cost technology.
In separate occasions, the Manila police unveiled its version of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), while the Makati police unveiled its bomb disposal robot, the MAC or the Mechanical Anti-Terrorist Concept robot. Manila's UAV is basically a remote controlled miniature helicopter typically used by hobbyists but are fitted with high performance real time cameras.
According to Inspector Jonathan dela Cruz, of the Manila Police Special Actions and Tactics Team, the department had initially purchased three such units for use in certain security sensitive fringes of the city such as the Isla Putting Bato and the Baseco Compound districts.
"We expect the UAV to contribute substantially to the improvement of security in the city because it has the capability to conduct surveillance monitoring over a wide area since it can see from above like your typical police helicopter," Dela Cruz said.
The Manila police has its own Robinson R 33 helicopter but because of the high cost of maintaining the aircraft, the aircraft is rarely used in day to day operations.
