Moscow: Western observers have said Russia’s presidential election was not fully fair and democratic but reflects the overall will of the people.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said unfair access to media coverage put into question the overall fairness of the vote.
Dmitry Medvedev, who has been groomed by the outgoing Putin, sailed to victory with about 70 percent of the vote, despite allegations of violations by two of his challengers. Liberal voices in Russia have called the election a stage-managed farce.
Election observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) refused to monitor the election, saying there had been a lack of official cooperation.
