Singapore: Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was recovering in a hospital on Sunday after surgery to implant a cardiac pacemaker to remedy an irregular heart rhythm.

Lee, 85, is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Monday after a successful surgery on Saturday, the prime minister's office said in a statement. Lee was hospitalized in September with an atrial flutter.

Lee was Singapore's first prime minister, ruling from 1959 to 1990, and now holds the title of minister mentor. His son is Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
