Madrid: A woman was in custody in Spain yesterday on suspicion of belonging to Colombia's FARC rebel group, the Interior Ministry said.
The woman, a Spanish national identified as Maria Remedios Garcia Albert, 57, was arrested Saturday morning in San Lorenzo de el Escorial, 58 kilometres northwest of Madrid, the ministry said in a statement.
Once police investigations have concluded, Garcia Albert will appear before the National Court No 5, which is presided by specialist anti-terror judge Baltasar Garzon, on at least one charge of belonging to a terrorist organisation, the ministry said in a statement late on Saturday.
The arrest was made in collaboration with Colombian police based on information found in computers that belonged to guerrilla commander Raul Reyes, who was killed in March, the ministry said.
"We are working intensively with excellent international cooperation," said Justice Minister Mariano Fernandez Bermejo.
Rebels of FARC - or the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - have been fighting against elected Colombian governments for 44 years.
The suspect is believed to have used a number of aliases to communicate with FARC leaders like Reyes - whose full name was given as Luis Edgar Devia Silva - and Ovidio Salinas Perez, also known as Juan Antonio Rojas.
The woman is believed to have travelled to the FARC's secret camps.
