Denver: Former US president Bill Clinton called Barack Obama “the man for the job” as he endorsed the Illinois senator’s nomination as Democratic presidential candidate.
Clinton gave his backing to Obama in a speech at the democratic convention in Denver on Wednesday night.
Obama himself appeared on stage to join Joe Biden, who was formally accepting the offer to be vice-presidential running mate.
Addressing a 70,000 strong crowd, Clinton gave a strong speech, saying: "My fellow Democrats, I say to you: Barack Obama is ready to lead America and to restore American leadership in the world ... Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States."
He added: "Last night Hillary told us in no uncertain terms that she is going to do everything she can to elect Barack Obama. That makes two of us.
"Actually that makes 18 million of us - because, like Hillary, I want all of you who supported her to vote for Barack Obama in November."
Senator Biden, was also effusive in his praise for Obama, and told the crowd: “We have the power to change it. That's Barack Obama, and that's what he will do for this country. He'll change it.”
As his speech became more aggressive, and he spoke about foreign policy issues he repeated the mantra “John McCain was wrong. Barack Obama was right.”
